Complacency is dangerous when crime is down

When crime is down in an area, we all breathe a sigh of relief.  The accepted wisdom, though, is that all that's happened is the criminals have moved on to another area, and will return once security inevitably tightens up in the new target area.  In the meantime, we should take stock of our security arrangements and be well prepared once the criminals return.

• There are always 'blind spots' in a home that criminals could use to gain unauthorised access while you're in another part of the house.  Some of these are rear doors, access doors from your garage and patios.  Sliding security gates will stop robbers from getting onto the premises, taking what they want and sneaking out before you notice them. 
• Balconies that allow criminals to climb from one room to another are another weak point.  Doors onto the balconies should be secured with retractable security doors that can be stacked out of sight when you're in these rooms.  They can be closed again to give you a stress-free nights' sleep.
• All windows, no matter how small or inaccessible, should be secured with home security barriers.  Criminals use children to get into out-of-the-way openings so that they can open the doors and let the others in.
