Trellidors strengthened through R7m investment in product upgrades

Security barrier manufacturer Trellidor is investing R7 000 000 in strengthening its products, bucking the trend to delay investing in the current uncertain economic climate. "The technical upgrades may seem like over-kill considering that some of our products are already the strongest on the market, but one can't value personal security high enough, and we have managed to pass on various price reductions at the same time to customers as a result of innovative designs and efficiencies," said managing director Andrew Thomas.

Trellidor's security barriers have been re-engineered based on information they've received on burglary methods from their distributors, affiliations and franchisees in South Africa and around the world, including the UK and Israel. According to Thomas, criminals are getting smarter and to stay ahead of their game manufacturers like Trellidor must make use of new technology and materials when they become available, to strengthen their products wherever possible.

R1m of the total investment has gone into tooling, new moulds for components, product development resources and manufacturing machinery. A further R6 000 000 will be spent over the next financial year to sustain the changes, including absorbing the costs of research and development and retooling rather than passing these on to customers. In total, 15 changes have been made to strengthen the familiar trellis-style barriers for doors and windows and more are planned for the upcoming months.

Every component change, no matter how small, is tested for strength, durability, ease of use and anti-corrosive properties by the Trellidor research and development team before being incorporated into the manufacturing process. In addition, any changes to Trellidor's ‘Trojan' and ‘Plus' designs have to be approved by the Loss Prevention Certification Board (LPCB) in London, an international body that has tested and certified these flagship physical barriers. Trellidor is the only company to have received their endorsement.

""Many products look similar to ours but simply don't have the same ability to resist determined assault. The product strengthening project will ensure that we maintain our position as leaders in the field of barrier security manufacturing without adding to the consumer's cost burden, giving them better security for less financial outlay," said Thomas.
